Nattadavu Step 7 | Bharatanatyam Adavu | Natyakriya Episode 12

* If you are new to Bharatanatyam, I urge you to start from the beginning.

Nattadavu is the 2nd set of steps (or ADAVU) in Bharatanatyam. Following the 6th step of Nattadavu, we move on to the 7th step.
The sollukattu (सोल्लुकट्टु) or Rhythmic syllables of is - Thaiyyum That Tha Thaiyyum Thaam

How to do Nattadavu 7th step - Step by step instructions -

I. Leg Movements

  1. Begin by sitting in Aramandi
  2. Lift you RIGHT LEG imagining the heel is touching your behind and place the heel to RIGHT SIDE of the body. {count 1}
  3. Hit the LEFT LEG in same position. {count 2}
  4. Lift RIGHT LEG and turn body to left sitting on left leg in a lunge {count 3}
  5. Hit LEFT LEG in same position {count 4}
  6. Turn body forward while lifting RIGHT LEG and placing heel forward {count 5}
  7. Hit LEFT LEG in same position {count 6}
  8. Hit RIGHT LEG back to original position {count 7}
  9. Hit LEFT LEG in same position {count 8}
{This was the RIGHT SIDE of the step. Repeat the same in Left Side too}

II. Hand Movements

  1. Begin by placing both hands in front of your chest in Katakamukha hand gesture
  2. As RIGHT LEG moves to right side, bend down to right side from hip, stretch both hands in Alapadma and take RIGHT HAND down to right toes while lifting up the LEFT HAND such that you form a straight line diagonally. (both hands together should look like this - \)
  3. Hit LEFT LEG in same position as (2)
  4. While turning body to left side, change hand gestures on both hands to Katakamukha
  5. Hit LEFT LEG in same position as (4)
  6. Bring both hands to center in Katakamukha and bend down with both hands changed to Alapadma gesture.
  7. Hit LEFT LEG in same position as (6)
  8. Come back to original position with both hands in Katamukha
  9. Hit LEFT LEG in same position as (7)
{This was the RIGHT SIDE of the step. Repeat the same in Left Side too}

Notes

  1. Do the step in 3 speeds
  2. The 2nd part of the step, viz. taking the leg to the front of the body & back is exactly like 1st part of 5th step of Nattadavu
