Visharu Adavu Step 1 | Tha Thai Thai Tha Adavu | Natyakriya Episode 14

Visharu Adavu, or more popularly known as the "Tha Thai Thai Tha" Adavu is the 3rd set of steps in Bharatanatyam. There are 5 different variations in this adavu. These are frequently used in a lot of Nritta choreography.

The sollukattu (सोल्लुकट्टु) or Rhythmic syllables of Visharu Adavu is - Thaa Thai Thai Tha

VISHARU ADAVU STEP 1 | 1st Tha Thai Thai Tha Adavu

I. Leg Movements

Begin by sitting in Aramandi position
  1. Hit RIGHT LEG in the same original position (Count 1)
  2. Lift the RIGHT LEG and hit slightly apart in the right side (Count 2)
  3. Lift LEFT LEG and place the left toes behing right leg (Count 3)
  4. Hit RIGHT LEG in the same position as above (Count 4)
  5. From behind, bring LEFT LEG to original position and hit (Count 5)
  6. Lift the LEFT LEG and hit slightly apart in the left side (Count 6)
  7. Lift RIGHT LEG and place the right toes behind left leg (Count 7)
  8. Hit LEFT LEG in the same position as above (Count 8)
  9. Repeat steps 1-8 again
This was the entire RIGHT SIDE of the step. Repeat the same counts but starting with LEFT LEG first for the LEFT SIDE.

II. Hand Gestures (Hasta Mudra)

III. Hand Movements (to be done along with leg movements)

Part I (Right side)
Place both hands in Pataka Gesture palms facing up in front of your chest
  1. Stretch out the RIGHT HAND (palm still facing up) forward
  2. From there, stretch the RIGHT HAND to the right side.
  3. Stretch the RIGHT HAND to the back. (look behind at your hand)
  4. From behind, bring the RIGHT HAND back in front of your chest in Katakamukha gesture.
  5. Maintaining Katakamukha with the right hand, stretch out the LEFT HAND (Pataka + palm still facing up) forward
  6. From there, stretch the LEFT HAND to the left side.
  7. Stretch the LEFT HAND to the back. (look behind at your hand)
  8. From behind, bring the LEFT HAND back in front of your chest in Katakamukha gesture.
Part - II (Right side)
Change both hands palm facing forward to Tripata Gesture
  1. As you move to RIGHT SIDE, gradually take LEFT PALM forward while keeping right palm in front of your chest (takes 4 beats)
  2. As you move to LEFT SIDE, gradually take LEFT PALM back while taking RIGHT PALM in forward (takes 4 beats)
This was the entire RIGHT SIDE of the step. Repeat the same counts but starting with LEFT LEG first for the LEFT SIDE.
