One of the songs describing the Blissful Dance of Lord Siva which I love
is, "Natanam Aadinaar" by Gopalakrishna
Bharatiyaar. The references to the story
of Agastya, Tillai (Chidambaram) and the Sollukattu swaras make this dance energizing, interesting and beautiful. It is a celebration of Shiva, the cosmic dancer, who balances creation and destruction.
Here's a YouTube video I found. The dancer expresses the meaning of the song beautifully. Notice the perfection with with she performs the steps. One of the most important aspects of performing a Shiva dance is to perform majestically.
I'll get into what Raagam, Thaalam, etc. are later. For now, I've written the lyrics of the song. There's a link at the end. You can download the song if you want to. :-)

Natanam Adinar - Meaning of the song:
(Please note that the translation may not be word - by word. I've only written what the sentences mean as a whole.)
Pallavi
He danced with joy, in a very stylish manner, In the Golden stage
Anupallavi
At the north mount Kailash, on the request of sages, as promised (without fail) he came at Chidambaram (thillaippadi) in the Tamil month of Tai (December-January) during the Guru Poosam star during the daytime
Charanam
With the eight directions trembling, the head of Adhisesha rocking, earth shaking, from his head was drops of Ganges was scattering, ponnadavan was celebrating, Gopalakrishna singing with love, hair shaking, snake moving its hood, sound coming out of that,
and making sounds like ThOm ThOm.

ReplyDeleteCan you please send me the swaras
ReplyDeleteCan you please upload the notation for this. I learnt to dance for this song and trying to better understand the chorecography. If I know how the song is done in Ata thalam (through notation) then I can analyze the choreography of this piece better
